Nominees announced for the Grand Off
Three Polish shorts – „Hanoi-Warsaw” by Katarzyna Klimkiewicz, „My poor head” directed by Adrian Panek, „The scent of flowers does not blow against the wind” made by Leszek Korusiewicz and Wojciech Kasperski’s documentary „Chasm”- have been nominated for the awards Grand Off 2010. The fourth edition of World Independent Film Awards - Grand Off will be held in Warsaw from 22nd to 27th November.
Grand Off is the biggest initiative worldwide aimed at promoting the best independent filmmakers. Nominations are being put forward in categories such as: directing, script, cinematography, editing and acting. The winner will be selected on 27th November by the jury consisting of 63 members coming from 28 countries of the world.„Hanoi-Warsaw” made by Katarzyna Klimkiewicz shows the story of a young Vietnameese Mai Anh who illegally gets to Poland. A woman has to reach Warsaw, in order to meet her fiancé who waits for her there. Her journey through Poland becomes a series of torments, violence and humiliation. The film was made as a result of the script competition „Young Proffesionals: debutants” launched by Kino Polska television Chanel, which purpose was to discover young talents and raise the interest in short fiction films. The best script among the contestants was awarded a grant for its production. Mastershot Studio, Association Film 1.2, Polish Filmmakers Association and Munk Studio become co-producers of the film.
Furthermore, what is worth mentioning, in December „Hanoi-Warsaw” is going to compete for the European Film Award in the category of Short Fiction Film.
„The scent of flowers does not blow against the wind” by Leszek Korusiewicz is based on Joanna Kocemba’s short story „Rainbow” refering to the Decalogue First Commandment “You shall have no other gods before me” and has been accomplished as a part of “Decalogue 89+” project. Adrian Panek’s “My poor head” – a fourth part of the same project recalls the short story „He” by Joanna Łabuz and corresponds to the fourth Commandment: 'Honour your father and your mother'.
„Chasm” directed by Wojciech Kasperski is an intimate portrait of a lonely gold seeker. Surrounded by the wild nature, his own fears and people whom he cannot trust, the main character islolates himself from the whole world being trapped by his desire of riches. The visually overwhelming film is a beautiful tale about the loneliness and everyday human toil.
Wojciech Kasperski’s documentary has been awarded at the numerous international film festivals. One of the most important award received by the dierector is „Little stamp” award for the Best Young Documentarist at the International Documentary Film festival „Zagreb-dox”.
