THE NUMBER OF LAURELS FOR KUBA CZEKAJ IS STILL GROWING
During a few days in August Kuba Czekaj, the director of a short feature film “Don’t be afraid of the dark room” was again awarded at two festivals: Portuguese AVANCA 2010 and “Two Riversides” in Kazimierz Dolny and Janowiec nad Wisłą.
AVANCA 2010 Festival, which took place from 23rd July to 1st August in Portugal is – as the event’s organizers describe it – an international meeting of people involved with cinema, television, video and multimedia. The axis of the festival, among many accompanying events, such as exhibitions, workshops or lectures, is the competition programme. This year’s winner of the main prize is Kuba Czekaj, author of the short feature film “Don’t be afraid of the dark room”.
This Polish director also received the Main Prize of the Independent School and Amateur Short Films Competition at 4th “Two Riversides” Film and Art Festival in Kazimierz Dolny and Janowiec nad Wisłą, which finished on 8th August. This is yet another significant award for Kuba Czekaj. Recently, the young feature film maker won, among other, the Main Prize at SHQIP FILM FEST in Kosovo, the Silver Hobby-Horse for the best short feature film at 50th Krakow Film Festival, and Grand Prix in the Young Polish Cinema at 34th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.
“Don’t be afraid of the dark room” is a story about a boundless love of eleven-year-old girl, Łata, to her father. Łata prepares a song for the school ceremony, organized on the occasion of the forthcoming Father’s Day. This makes the girl look at her father more carefully than usual. In order to describe her feelings as well as she can, the girl begins to slowly unravel secrets hidden by her father…
The film was made within the frames of “30 minutes” programme, coordinated by Munk Studio, working by the Polish Filmmakers Association. This film is available on the latest edition of Munk Studio DVD – “Polish debuts 2009/2010”.
