POLISH FILMS AT THE FESTIVAL IN KARLOVY VARY
With the feature films by Borys Lankosz (“Reverse”) and by Paweł Sala (“Mother Teresa of Cats”) at this year’s 45th International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, two Polish documentaries will be shown: “Beats of Freedom” by Wojciech Słota and Leszek Gnoiński and “The Promised One” by Lesław Dobrucki, who will compete for the main prize in the Documentary Film Competition.
The International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, the Czech Republic, is one of the most important festivals on the world, as well as the largest film event in the Czech Republic. Every year in Karlovy Vary over 200 films from different corners of the world appear, most of which take part in the competitions in several categories. Apart from the international competition, in which the feature films compete for the Crystal Globe, there is the Documentary Film Competition in the festival’s programme. This year, the documentary “Little Bride” by Lesław Dobrucki qualified to the competition. “Little Bride”, produced by the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing, is a story about a young Turkish woman whose tragedy began when, aged thirteen, she was sent to Germany and given in marriage.
Apart from this, in the non-competing cycle “2010: A Musical Odyssey” the documentary “Beats of Freedom” by Wojciech Słota and Leszek Gnoiński will be presented. This is a film about the birth of rock music in Poland and its role and strength in times when people lived cut off from the rest of the world because of the Iron Curtain.
