POLES - AWARD-WINNERS IN SPAIN

Last weekend, there increased the number of awards won by two Polish films - "The Island" by Katarzyna Klimkiewicz and Dominga Sotomayor, as well as "The Mother" by Łukasz Ostalski. Both films were awarded at the 42nd edition of the festival in Huesca, Spain.

The main award - the Danzante award - in the Latin American short film competition went to "The Island" by Katarzyna Klimkiewicz and Dominga Sotomayor. This is yet another prestigious award for "The Island," which in January was given the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival. The film is a record of a family meeting on the island of Chiloe and was made in the Polish-Chilean-Danish co-production. The award gives "The Island" the opportunity to apply for the nomination for the Academy Award in the short film category.

Special Mention in the international short film competition went to Łukasz Ostalski - the author of the fiction film "The Mother". This is already the seventh award won by this film abroad. Ostalski's diploma film, made during his studies at Gdynia Film School, is a portrait of a mother (Danuta Stenka) who, faced with her son's irresponsibility, has to take a dramatic decision. So far, the film was awarded, among others, at the festivals in Kiev, Tampere, Pula and Odense.

The festival in Huesca is one of the oldest Spanish film festivals and one of the leading festivals presenting short films.  This year's, 42nd edition took place from 16th to 21st  May, and in the competition section, apart from aforementioned "The Island" and "The Mother," participated also the début short film by Paweł Orwat, "The Boys”.
