THE SLEEPLESSNESS OF JUTKA

POLISH TITLE: BEZSENNOŚĆ JUTKI

Julia, who is 7, thinks she came to Łódź on holiday only, but in fact she lives with her grandpa and auntie imprisoned in the ghetto. The girl does not understand why she cannot run freely around the city or play with children and has no idea where her parents left. Her grandfather tries to explain the world to her comparing it to the story of Minotaur – Łódź becomes an ancient labyrinth and the Nazis – a monster from the myth. A subtle combination of dramatic World War II events with Greek mythology which depicts the suffering and drama of the time with a large dose of sensitivity.
