It is easy to get absorbed into the multi-ethnic pot of today’s Los Angeles but it is even easier to feel isolated and insecure about your fate there, especially if your visa is about to expire. Shin, who is working in a bar, must go back to Japan although he has just met someone who could change the monotonous rhythm of his lonesome life.This someone is a young woman working in a cake shop in a Hispanic district who is not indifferent to his shy courtship. Sawicki’s film, gripped by a melancholy mood, is about the inability to communicate due to the language and cultural difficulties, the latter being harder to overcome. ‘The Loneliness …’ is a bitter reflection on the American dream and has received the main prize at the International Short Film Festival in Santiago.
